Frequently Asked Questions
What is Phenomenal Sobriety Mentoring?
It's up to twelve weeks of working with me, one to one. We meet for one-hour sessions, remotely, and I build you a bespoke recovery plan around your drinking and your life. You also get the THRIVE System, more than 140 evidence-based techniques and the Phenomenal workbook. It's a chance to work with me personally, as your guide and mentor.
Who is it for?
Anyone ready to change their relationship with alcohol, whether you're sober-curious, worried about your drinking, or have tried to stop before. It suits people who want personal guidance rather than a group programme or a course they work through alone.
What makes working with you different?
I combine lived experience with professional training. I've been alcohol free for over nine years and I'm an addiction therapist, so I understand where you are and I know what works. I believe sobriety isn't punishment, it's privilege, and with personal guidance and proven methods, lasting change becomes natural.
How does it work?
We start with a conversation to make sure we're a good fit. Then we meet for up to twelve one-hour sessions over twelve weeks, remotely. Together we work through my THRIVE system and build your bespoke recovery plan, and the workbook supports you between sessions. You'll build sustainable habits, develop coping strategies and celebrate milestones along the way.
Does it really work?
It's built on evidence-based techniques, professional training and lived experience, and it focuses on building new patterns while celebrating every milestone. I can't promise a particular outcome, because everyone's journey is different, but I can promise proven tools, genuine support and my full attention.
Can I work with you if I'm drinking dependently?
If you are drinking dependently, it's essential to seek medical care before you stop. Stopping alcohol suddenly when you're physically dependent can be extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening. I'm not a medical doctor, but I can help point you toward appropriate medical support and then work with you once it's safe to do so. Your safety comes first, so please speak with your GP or your local alcohol service for medical supervision before stopping. Once you're medically stable, we can build a personalised plan for your recovery together.
Is it guaranteed to stop my drinking?
No. Nobody can honestly guarantee that. What I offer is expert guidance and a plan built around you, and ultimate success depends on your commitment to the process. If you're unsure whether this is right for you, book a call first and we'll talk it through.
How long does it take?
The mentoring runs for twelve weeks, with twelve one-hour sessions. If you'd rather start smaller, you can book a single session or a block of six instead.
Can you help with other addictions, such as drugs?
Yes, the core principles and strategies can be applied to other substance use challenges. As an accredited addiction specialist, I've helped many people overcome various substance dependencies using these same evidence-based techniques. We can tailor our work to your situation and goals.
Is this a medical intervention?
No. My role is not to provide medical services, or to diagnose, treat or cure any disease, condition or other physical or mental ailment. I am an addiction and recovery therapist, with a background in addiction and training as a practitioner. My role is to support you as you reach your wellness goals and make positive, sustainable lifestyle changes. I am not acting as a medical doctor, psychologist or any other licensed healthcare provider.
Who is behind Phenomenal?
I'm David Henzell, the founder and creator of Phenomenal. As a recovered alcoholic turned professional practitioner, I combine lived experience with expert training to guide others toward lasting sobriety. Having walked this path myself, I understand the challenges you face, and I've dedicated my career to helping people transform their relationship with alcohol through compassionate, evidence-based support.
